Feb. 14, 1947 - October 30, 2010
Michael Douglas McKinnon passed away after a courageous battle with lymphoma.
Mike was born on Hospital Hill in Bend, Oregon, on February 14, 1947, to George and Mary Jane (Houk) McKinnon. He grew up in Redmond, attending Redmond schools, participating in 4-H and athletics. He graduated from Oregon State University with degrees in business and agriculture. Mike opened McKinnon Insurance Agency in Redmond, Oregon, in the 1970s and later, with partners, started Century Insurance Group in 1996 in Bend, Oregon. He stayed true to his lifelong passion of developing and maintaining ranches throughout the Central Oregon area. His grandfather, Mack Houk, along with two friends, started the Deschutes County Fair. Mike followed in his grandfather's and father's footsteps by serving as a board member and the president of the Deschutes County Fair Association and member of the Deschutes County Fair Board. He was later honored as Grand Marshall of the Deschutes County Fair.
Mike had three children with his first wife, Alison Hamlin. In 1985, he married Teri Coates Blodgett and together they raised their five children. Mike had a desire to experience all aspects of life. He enjoyed hunting, running, skiing, river rafting, traveling the world, ranching, barbecuing, and of course, entertaining his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Teri, sons, Steve McKinnon, Mark (Casey) McKinnon, daughters, Julia Cooper, Jessica (Chris) Intlekofer, Megan Blodgett, ten grandchildren, sister, Jan (John) Hodgers, brothers, Dick (Mollie) McKinnon and Jim (Nancy) McKinnon, and many nieces and nephews.

Mary Jane Houk McKinnon
Mary Jane Houk McKinnon (aka "Grammy") : Grammy was born in Redmond, Oregon in 1920. She went all through school in Redmond, then went on to Oregon State University where she graduated in 1941. She was an excellent student and very smart. However, she was in college in a time that many men thought a woman shouldn't be in school because they weren't smart enough. She proved them wrong by graduating at the top of her University class! She met George Ellis McKinnon in 1940. He was also going to Oregon State University and needed a ride from Prineville to Corvallis one winter. Since Jane had a car, he caught a ride with her, and it was "love at first sight"! They married in 1942, just before he went off to World War II. She followed him around the country while he was in training to be a pilot in the Army AirForce. A few months before he left, Jane & George had their first child, Janet Gail (Nana!!). George was a pilot with the 8th Air Force, had the rank of Captain and flew C47's over the Burma Hump. While George was in the war, Jane & baby Janet lived with her parents, Mary & Mack Houk. After the war, Jane & George with baby Janet went back to OSU where George finished his education. They then returned to Redmond as they bought into the Ford Dealership. Grammy always was the office manager, bookeeper & secretary for the entire business. She also had 3 more children - Mike, Dick, & Jim. She was very active in many of Redmond's organizations, always being the leader. Because of all her achievements, in 1970 she was listed in the Who's Who of Oregon Women. She was very proud of this award. After George died in a plane crash in 1967, she went back to OSU to get her education degree, then taught for the next 20 years in Culver, a small town between Redmond & Madras. She was THE business department teaching typing, shorthand, and bookkeeping. After retirement in 1987, she took up traveling around the country in her motor home. This was an extraordinary activity for a woman her age since most women her age were taught to stay at home. In about 1996 she sold her motor home, and for the rest of her life she dreamed of getting another and going on the road again! She died in April, 2005.
Mary Louisa Laxson Houk
Mary Louisa Laxson Houk: Mary was born in Black Water, Missouri in 1897, also 101 years before you were born. When she was 9 years old her family took the train from Missouri to Portland, Oregon along with many of her family members. She had 1 brother and 4 sisters. She went through school in Portland, then met Mack (that's what he was always called) in church. They married in 1917. She worked in a department store in Portland until she and Mack moved to Redmond, Oregon. She always helped out in the Ford business as secretary. Her daughter, Jane, was born in 1920, and a son in 1924. She was a member in many of Redmond's activities and organizations, including being a Girls Scout Leader and the Eastern Star. She loved to bowl, and won many trophies. In 1937 she and Mack, along with their children traveled from Redmond to Washington DC and back pulling a trailer. This was in the early days of trailers and everywhere they went people wanted to peek inside to see this new way of traveling! Grandma Mary was a wonderful cook who always had something special for us to eat. She was active until she died in 1979.
Porter McKinley Houk
PORTER: Porter "Mack" McKinley Houk was born 101 years after you, in 1897 in North Cove, Washington. He had 3 brothers (Otto, Guy, Lester) & 1 sister (Ila). He grew up in South Bend, Washington where his father (George Lewis) drove a stagecoach, and his mother (Laura Richman) had a candy & ice cream store. He finished out the 9th grade in Portland, Oregon and went to work as an office boy for Standard Oil Company. By 1917 he had met his future wife (Mary Laxson) in church. In 1918 he was called up for World War I, and only got as far as Seattle where he got appendicitis and had to be discharged and sent home back to Portland. He married Mary in 1917. In 1919 he traveled to Redmond, Oregon to join his brother, Otto, as owners of the Ford Dealerships in Redmond & Prineville. In 1920 his daughter, Mary "Jane", was born. (Your Great-grandmother!) Four years later his son, Richard, was born. Mack was very active in the Redmond community. He helped start the Deschutes County Fair, was a charter member of the golf club, and was active in promoting Redmond as a great place to live. He also helped build the Redmond airport by supplying the big equipment to clear the land for the runway and terminal. He continued as owner of the Ford dealerships until he sold them, the Redmond dealership sold to his daughter & husband George Ellis McKinnon. He and Mary retired in 1955 and spent many years in Arizona during the winters. They both loved camping and had a trailer they pulled all over the West during the summers. He died in 1988.
